Charlemagne is a Canadian city in Quebec, located in the L'Assomption Regional County Municipality (MRC) in the Lanaudière region. It is part of the Greater Montreal area.
The area was named Laurier in 1906, then Charlemagne in 1907, in reference to Romuald-Charlemagne Laurier, Member of Parliament for L'Assomption in the House of Commons from 1900 to 1906 and half-brother of Wilfrid Laurier. The name Charlemagne also refers to the medieval emperor of the same name who introduced public schools in France.
Charlemagne is located near the confluence of four waterways: the St. Lawrence River, the Rivière des Prairies, the Rivière des Mille Îles, and the L'Assomption River. Charlemagne covers an area of approximately 2.08 square kilometers between the towns of Lachenaie and Repentigny.
